Exploring Career Opportunities In Academic Field

October 19, 2020 by Steph Leave a Comment

The purpose of enrolling in a professional degree is to continue education and later pursue a career to ensure a stable income. By the end of high school, almost every student has a particular idea about their academic niche. Understanding the academic niche plays a decisive role in our choices of professional degrees and career pathways. Many of our friends and peers choose different paths around medicine, engineering, computers, or finance. Some of them select career pathways or professional degrees that have very bland assumptions about them. For instance, people might question your choice of choosing a degree in mathematics, social work, or even education.

Business, Office, Training, Problem, Solution

When we hear someone pursuing a degree in education, the first perception that comes in our mind is they will only find a job as a teacher. These perceptions about such degrees are mainstream because, unlike degrees in medicine or other STEM fields, education needs exploration. We do not know much about the occupation pathway that one can choose with a degree in education. However, a degree in education can equip you with the skills and knowledge of modern teaching and learning practices and prepare you for their organizations’ implementations.

When it comes to finding education jobs, one has to search for many offices and potential careers. A degree in education does not bound you to the profession of teaching only. Here are some career opportunities to explore as a fresh graduate with a professional degree in education.

  • Community education officer

A community education officer is responsible for organizing local education training opportunities and ensures local participation. They also enhance the chances for skills development in literacy and numeracy. As a community education officer, you can work in socially deprived areas. A community education office works closely with course providers and external partners and develops a positive working relationship with community support volunteers.

  • Early years teacher

The word early years refers to the developmental and learning years of a child. As a fresh graduate in education, you can set up new learning pathways for children and nurture them through their learning years. By motivating children and creatively using the resources, you can help them learn new things. Early-year teachers or EYTs prepare students for the transition in primary school and equip them well enough to adjust to the transitional phase. EYTs play a vital role in providing pastoral care to children and a secure learning environment.

  • Director of career services

Colleges and universities have a career services department that facilitates the faculty, alumni, and currently enrolled students. As a career services department leader, you can create a network of faculty members and potential students who can contribute to a college or university’s teaching system. You can also motivate them to develop useful programs to guide them through their academic learning and provide counsel wherever needed. Students or young faculty members who want to pursue their careers within the university are often confused about the opportunities. A career services department can give them a detailed insight into the professions they can explore in the field.

  • Education administrator

They are also known as academic dean and provost. An education administrator is responsible for assuring teaching and learning practices, deals in admissions, and manages lecturer and teachers. They also look after a student’s academic life from admissions to their graduation. They supervise the completion of the curriculum within the timeline, work with educational boards or governors to discuss the policies. Academic deans play a substantial role in suggesting ideas for further endeavors to add value to education.

  • Education consultant

The curriculum that we study holds a significant value in revealing the quality of education. Education consultant help is assembling the curriculum through their experience in learning and teaching. You can also offer your services to societies and learners to identify the areas that need improvements. Education consultants can provide their expertise in career advice and support, special needs, online educational support, and teachers’ training and developments. Education consultants can enjoy working with a university or choose to work as a freelance consultant and help organizations improve the quality of education.

Conclusion
Universities or higher education organizations face a lot of challenges and responsibilities. The students and faculty members require experts with an education degree from planning out the curriculum to managing. Students who pursue a degree in education can avail of teaching opportunities in their respective organizations to polish their skills and gain experience. Learning and teaching is an ongoing process, and with changing technologies, the education system needs tech-savvy people. These tech-savvy people with a background in education can provide valuable insight into incorporating changes in the system. Education plays a positive role in the progress of the country as the employment ratio depends on it.
