Rectangular Coordinate System

The coordinate system containing two axes that is vertical and horizontal with center as origin is known as rectangular coordinate system. These two axes also form four quadrants. In Rectangular Coordinate System axes are represented by the letters ‘x’ and ‘y’ where x represents horizontal axis and ‘y’ represents vertical axis. The horizontal line in a plane is known as x – axis and the vertical line in a plane Geometry is known as y – axis.

The Point where two axes intersect is known as origin of a plane. The value of origin is always zero; it can not increase or decrease. A Rectangular Coordinate System splits plane into four quadrants which are known as 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th quadrant in a plane. Each pair in the plane or graph is represented as Ordered Pair which depends upon two axes which is ‘x’ and ‘y’ axis. In the plane or graph the x – coordinates is considered first after that we use y – coordinate in the ordered pair (x, y). The rectangular coordinates system is also known as the Cartesian coordinate system. In first quadrant both the values of ‘x’ and ‘y’ are positive, in case of second quadrant the value of x- coordinate is negative and the value of y- coordinate is positive, in the third quadrant the values of both ‘x’ and ‘y’ coordinates are negative and in the last quadrant the value of x- coordinate is positive and the value of y- coordinate is negative. Two dimensional system has two axes and three dimensional system has four axis which is x – axis, y – axis and z – axis. This is all about the rectangular coordinates system in the plane of geometry.
