# Rational And Irrational Numbers

Numbers appear like dancing letters to many students as they are not able to distinguish between different categories of numbers and get confused in understanding their concepts. Number family has numerous of siblings and one of them is Irrational and Rational Numbers.

## What are Rational Numbers?

Rational numbers are Set of positive Fractions, negative fractions and zero. It can be expressed in form $\frac{p}{q}$ where q $\neq$ 0.

There are two Types of Rational Numbers:

Positive Rational Numbers: A rational number is said to be positive if both numerator and denominator having the same sign either positive or negative.
Example: $\frac{3}{5}$, $\frac{-2}{-3}$.

Negative Rational Numbers: A rational number is said to be negative if both numerator and denominator are having the signs opposite to each other.
Example: $\frac{-2}{5}$, $\frac{7}{-3}$.

## What are Irrational Numbers?

Numbers which are not rational are called irrational numbers. It can also be in fractional form but can be expressed in the form of non recurring Decimals.
Example: $\sqrt{7}$, $\frac{\pi}{3}$ etc.
Although we don't use the irrational numbers often but they do exist on the number line.

## What are Rational and Irrational Numbers?

When we deal Rational and Irrational Numbers, the first question arise in our mind is that  What are Rational and Irrational Numbers? These are the type of numbers coming in number system.

Let us go through the first part of question what are Rational numbers?
Rational numbers are those numbers which can be represented as fraction means...Read More

## Rational And Irrational Numbers Definition

A number that is made of simple fraction is defined as Rational number. The numbers that we use in rational number must be integers only.
Like if we have p, q as integers. Then Rational Numbers can be expressed as $\frac{p}{q}$ where denominator q can’t be zero. Rational numbers are non-unique that is a rational number as a fraction is not ...Read More

## What are Rational numbers?

Math is all about Numbers, and whenever we deal with mathematics we have to deal with different Types of Numbers. In the different categories of numbers, Rational numbers play an important and vital role. Now the query is What is a Rational Number?

The word 'Rational' is derived from the most popular Math term Ratio. Rational number can be defined as the...Read More

## History of Irrational Numbers

An Irrational number is any real number which is not rational. That means an irrational number cannot be represented as a simple fraction. It has no perfect value and can be expressed as a non recurring decimal. Let us know about its history in this section.

At the time of the Greeks (from about the fifth century), people use whole positive numbers and F...Read More

## Rational Numbers

We all know that real number is something which exists in nature as real. Rational number is a part of it. Rational number is all about expressing the numbers in Fractions or Decimals. Let us study more about it in this ...Read More

## Irrational Numbers

Consider the value of $\pi$. The Value of $\pi$ = 3.145926535897932384626433882795.... and so on. Here we could observe that the Decimal Place value of $\pi$ is not repeating. Similarly many kind of numbers are there i...Read More

## Rational Expressions

Rational Numbers can form expressions when we join Rational Numbers with various mathematical operators namely addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Rational Numbers are the numbers which are written in ...Read More

## Rational Expressions Word Problems

The rational expression is an expression which is expressed in the form of two integers. The rational expression is rational because one Integer is divided by the second one. Rational expression word p...Read More

## Real World Problems with Rational Numbers

Rational numbers are the part of Real Numbers but the only necessary condition is that they need to be represented in the form of $\frac{p}{q}$, where p and q are integers and q $\neq$ 0.

## Scientific Notation and Rational Numbers

A rational number is a number which can be expressed exactly as a fraction $\frac{p}{q}$ where p and q are two integers with denominator non zero and represented by 'Q'. The addition and multiplic...Read More
