Rational And Irrational Numbers

Numbers appear like dancing letters to many students as they are not able to distinguish between different categories of numbers and get confused in understanding their concepts. Number family has numerous of siblings and one of them is Irrational and Rational Numbers.

What are Rational Numbers?

Rational numbers are Set of positive Fractions, negative fractions and zero. It can be expressed in form $\frac{p}{q}$ where q $\neq$ 0.

There are two Types of Rational Numbers:

Positive Rational Numbers: A rational number is said to be positive if both numerator and denominator having the same sign either positive or negative.
Example: $\frac{3}{5}$, $\frac{-2}{-3}$.

Negative Rational Numbers: A rational number is said to be negative if both numerator and denominator are having the signs opposite to each other.
Example: $\frac{-2}{5}$, $\frac{7}{-3}$.

What are Irrational Numbers?

Numbers which are not rational are called irrational numbers. It can also be in fractional form but can be expressed in the form of non recurring Decimals.
Example: $\sqrt{7}$, $\frac{\pi}{3}$ etc.
Although we don't use the irrational numbers often but they do exist on the number line.
