# Operations of Subtractions

Mathematics is not only the collection of Numbers of different types(i.e, natural numbers, whole numbers, fractions, integers, rational and irrational numbers and real numbers) but also includes the combination of mathematical operators(i.e, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) which actually increase relevancy of existence of the numbers.

The basic operations of subtraction are stated below. Basically subtraction word is significant for subtracting or separating a part or portion from the given quantity. The '-' sign is used  to represent the operations of subtraction.

Subtraction can be done by backward counting, which is the most easy and beginners method of subtraction.  If we simply need to subtract 5 from 23, then  we count 5 backward. So, we have 22, 21, 20, 19 and 18 as previous 5 numbers. So we get 18 as the result.

23 - 5 = 18

To do some complex calculations of subtraction i.e, for higher digits row method was developed in which subtraction process became easy.  Here we start subtraction from ones place and proceed towards left of the place value as tens, hundreds... and so on .

Example 1:
Example 2:

## What will be the solution of: 3 - 3?

Here we can see that both the Numbers are same, and when we do subtraction of same numbers the result is always zero. Now, we will see how you can subtract this using Column Subtraction, how this process is executed.
3
-3

0
------

## What will be the solution of: 3 - 2?

Here we have 3 to left of ‘–‘ while 2 on the right side of it, and as we know that the value of 3 is greater than that of 2, the result will be positive and we have to subtract these single digit Numbers.
3
-2
-------
1
-------
So, we get 1 on subtracting 2 from 3.

## What will be the result of 3 - 7?

Here we can see that the number to the left of “ - ” is smaller than that on the right side of sign so, the result will be have a negative sign, and apart from this we will just subtract 7 by 3 and then put a negative sign in the solution.

7
-3
-------
4
Here we have will change the sign after doing the subtraction, hence we will get “ - 4 “.

## What will be the result of 10 – 2?

Here we have a 2 digit number and a 1 digit number and also the number to the left of ' -' sign is greater than the number to the right, hence the output will be positive.

1 0
- 2
--------
0 8
-------
Here we will first borrow one to make zero at once Position 10 and then subtract 2 from it, placing 8 as output and leaving 0 at ten's place.

## What will be the output of 961 - 23?

Here we have a 3 digit number and we have to subtract a two digit number from it, first we will do the process of subtraction being followed from the one's Position and then moving to the tenth position of that number and in this way we get 938 with a positive sign.

9 6 1
- 2 3
------------
9 3 8
-----------

## What will be the result of 78 - 35?

Here again we have bigger number to the left of '-' sign and we have smaller number to the right of it, giving us positive number, and applying the simple subtraction of first one's and later tenth Position.
We will now see the Graphical representation of this process of subtraction.
7 8
- 3 5
-----------
4 3
------------
Here, we have a simple subtraction and from this we first do the subtraction at one's place and then will move to subtraction at ten's place. Following ( 8 – 5 ) and then ( 7 -3 ) to get the output i.e. 43.

## What will be the result when you subtract 111 and 19?

Here, we have simple subtraction of a 3 digit number with a 2 digit number, and result will be a positive number. We will now see the Graphical representation of this process of subtraction.

1 1 1
-  1 9
------------
9 2
-----------

## What will be the result of 987 - 968 ?

Here we will first do the subtraction at one's Position, and then move to the tenth position and after that to the hundredth position, but as the number on the right is smaller to the number on the left of '-', the result will be positive in the end. We will now see the Graphical representation of this process of subtraction.
9 8  7
- 9 6 8
-------------
0 1 9
------------

## What will be the result when you subtract 34 from 0?

Subtract 34 from 0 means 0 - 34. As we can see the number to the right of '-' is greater than the number to the left in that case, the result will be negative. Here first do simple subtraction, which give us 34 and put a negative sign in the result.

We will now see the Graphical representation of this process of subtraction.
3 4
- 0
--------
3 4
--------
Thus, we will get -34 when we subtract 34 from 0.

## What will be the result when you subtract 96 from 800?

Subtract 96 from 800 means 800 - 96.

8 0 0
- 9 6
--------
7 0 4
--------
In this 0 at the one's Position borrow 1 from the zero at the ten's position as it is also zero so first zero at ten's position will borrow one from 8 which is at hundredth position and it become 10, now we borrow 1 from 10 and now 0 at one's position become 10. and become 10. Now, we first subtract 6 from 10 and get 4. When we borrow 1 from zero it  becomes nine. Now, subtract 9 from 9 we get 0 and in at hundred position now only 7 remains. Thus, answer is 704.
