# Column Subtraction

Subtraction is used to subtract or separate a portion from the given quantity. The '-' sign is used  to represent the operations of subtraction. Subtraction can be done by backward counting. If we need to subtract 6 - 2, then simply we count backward 2 from 6 i.e, 5,4. Then the required result 6 - 2 is 4.

While subtracting bigger digits the backward counting method is not practically feasible. In such cases we go for column subtraction method. The column subtraction method can be explained by some examples:

## Subtract the following 3 digits numbers 567and 259?

We have done subtraction column wise as follows:

step a ) First, we will take rightmost column and subtract the lower row elements from upper row.
Subtracting 9 from 7, as 7 is less than 9. we cannot subtract it from 9. For this we have to borrow 1 from the left column element.
Hence borrowing 1 from 6, we get
7 becomes 17 and 6 becomes 5.
Now, we can subtract 9 from 17.
Hence, we get  17-9=8.

Step b) Now coming to second column, 6 became 5 in the previous step.
Hence, 5-5=0.
Step c) Now, subtracting third column elements,
5-2=3.
Hence, we get the final answer as 308.

## Subtract the given 2 digits numbers 99 and 55?

Step a): Taking first column from right, we have two elements 9 and 5.
Here, 9 is greater than 5. So, there is no need to borrow.
9-5=4,
step b) Now, we have to consider the next column towards left.
We again have the same elements.9 and 5.
9-5=4.
Hence, the answer, 99 - 55 = 44.

## Subtract the given 4 digit numbers 1949 and 455?

Step a): Here, we have a 4 digit number and a 3 digit number.
Always keep in mind that we have to write our digits starting from right as shown above.
Taking first column, subtracting 5 from 9,
9-5=4.
Step b): Coming to next column,
we cannot subtract 5 from 4 as 5 is greater than 4.
so, we will borrow 1 from next left column element.
Effect of borrowing:
4 become 14.
9 becomes (9-1) = 8.
Now, we can subtract 5 from 14 as 5 is less than 14.
14-5=9.
Step c): Coming to next column towards left,
8-4=4
Step d) Taking fourth column from right,
we have 1 in the first row but the second number is a 3 digit number.
So, 1 will be unaffected as we have no digit to subtract from it and it is written as it is.

## Subtract 755 from 957?

Step 1: Taking rightmost column, 7 - 5 = 2.
Step 2: Moving towards left, picking the middle column,
5 - 5 = 0.
Step 3: Similarly, moving towards left and taking the leftmost column,
9 - 7 = 2.
Hence, the answer is 9 5 7 - 7 5 5 = 2 0 2.

## Subtract the following numbers 5053 and 9365?

In the given Numbers, first we have to decide the greater of the two numbers.
Here, 9365 is greater than 5053.
Now, we can subtract 5053 from 9365 as a lesser number can be subtracted from greater number.

9       3       6      5

5        0       5       3

Step a) Taking first column from right, we have two elements,
5 and 3.
5-3=2.
Step b): moving towards left,
Taking both elements of the second column from right,
6-5=1
Step c):
now, we have 3 and 0 in the third column from right.
3-0=3
Step d)
Similarly, we have 9 and 5 in the fourth column from right.
Subtracting 5 from 9, we have,
9-5=4.
9365-5053=4312
Till now, we have taken the numbers without Decimals.
Now, consider some examples between the decimal numbers.
Decimal subtraction is similar to the previous subtraction.

## Subtract  75.2 - 35.1?

Step a):  The decimal subtraction is not different from previous subtraction.
Taking rightmost column from right,
we have two elements,
2 and 1.
2-1=1
Step b) Moving towards left, we have now decimal.
Put the decimal in the answer right below its Position in the question as shown.

Step c): towards left,
We have two Numbers 5 and 5.
So, 5-5 = 0.
Step d) now, we are at the last column from right,
So, the elements are 7 and 5.
7-5=2.
Hence, we have our answer 40.1.

## Subtract the following:                                 5 6 . 9                             -   4 9 . 2                             ___________                             ___________

Step a) Its solution process is similar to all that we discussed above.
Taking rightmost column and subtracting Numbers, we get
9 - 2 = 7
Step b) Coming to the next left column,
we have the decimal digits, so we have to put decimal at the corresponding place.
Step c)
Now, picking the next column towards left,

As 6 is less than 9, hence we have to borrow 1 from adjacent number.
Effects of borrowing:
5 become 4.
6 become 16.
Now, we can subtract,
Hence, 16 - 9 = 7
Step d)
Moving towards left,
We have
4-4 = 0
Remember, 5 became 4 after borrow.
Hence we get our result, which is 56.9 - 49.2 = 07.7.

## Subtract 99.2 - 5.5?

Here, we must remember that we have to write Numbers taking digits starting from right to left.
The decimal of both the numbers must be at the right place under same column.
Hence,

5       .       5

9         3        .        7

Step a) Taking rightmost columns,
2 is less than 5.
So, we have to borrow 1 from the adjacent left column.
Effects of borrowing:
9 become 8.
2 become 12.

Now, subtracting,
12-5=7

Step b) Taking next column, putting decimal in the answer.
Step c) Picking next column,
8-5=3.
We have taken 8 as its value changed due to borrow in the previous step.
Step d)
We have only one element in the last column from the right,
Writing 9 as it is in the answer.

## Subtract 357.9 from 543.9?

Step a) Taking first column from right,
9-9=0
Step b)
we have a Decimals in this column, so putting decimal in the answer at the corresponding place.
Step c):
We have, 3 and 7.
3 is less than 7.
So, borrowing from next left column, we have
effects of borrowing,
3 becomes 13.
4 become 3.
13-7=6,
Step d)
we have to subtract 5 from 3 as 4 was changed to 3 in the previous step.
Now, borrowing again as 3 is less than 5.
We have,
13-5=8
Step d) We have, 4-3=1,
5 was changed to 4 in the previous step.
